:High School Football Game Tonight: Rittman Heads Outta Town Too Take on The Dalton Bulldogs...

HIGH SCHOOL
FOOTBALL NEWS

Scouting Rittman at Dalton
Updated: Wednesday, October 14, 2009The teams: The Dalton Bulldogs returned to their winning ways last week, notching a 19-7 win over a game Northwestern team to move to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the Wayne County Athletic League. Dalton coach Bob Ramsay said the Bulldogs were far from their best in the win, but it was a better final result than the 27-13 defeat his team suffered to Hillsdale in Week Six. The Bulldogs aren’t going to throw it much out of their multiple formation offense, but quarterback Gavin Hackett is completing just over 50 percent of his passes this season when he does throw. Jordan Boak, Garret Raff, Travis Lint and Jake Zeek are Hackett’s favorite targets when he does go to the air. The Bulldogs’ four-pronged running game consists of shifty backs Lint and Greg Blevins attacking the edges, Andy Beun working between the tackles and Hackett exploiting a defense on option plays. Defensively, the Bulldogs’ 4-4 scheme has been very stout against the run and excelled at keeping teams out of the end zone. Linebackers Matt Torgler and Beun hit anything within sight, while Derek Miller and Mic Merriman have been among the team’s top down linemen. Raff and Boak are both ball hawks in the seconday. First-year Rittman coach Brent Besancon has a large task in front of him in attempting to turn around the Indians. The Indians entered this season having gone 1-29 – and lost 29 straight games – since a 7-4 campaign in 2005 that ended in a Division V playoff appearance under former coach Doug Haas. The Indians did start the season off right with a 27-0 win over Conotton Valley in Week One, but have dropped six straight since then. The good news for the Indians is that they’ve more than held their own in all those losses, as their largest margin of defeat this season came in a 27-6 loss to Northwestern in Week Four. Besancon, a former assistant at Smithville before he coached New London for two seasons, has the Indians operating out of a spread offense. Brandon Bauman has lined up at running back and quarterback this season, but has been the QB the last couple games. He keys the offense with both his passing and running ability. Defensively, the Indians have been hit with several injuries along both lines, which has necessitated them shifting from a 4-4 look earlier this season to a 3-3 stack. The key matchup: Rittman comes into this game coming off a dangerous double dose of trouble in last week’s 22-6 loss to Chippewa. Rittman struggled to stop the running game last week and also had issues generating any of its own offensive attack on the ground. The challenge this week is to move the chains against a Dalton defense that has limited five of its seven foes to single digits this season, while also slowing down the Bulldogs’ multi-faceted running game. It’s a task that teams with a more impressive pedigree than the Indians have struggled with this season, so Rittman definitely has its work cut out. Streaks, stats and facts: Rittman enters this week having dropped its last 26 WCAL games. As part of that streak, Dalton won last year’s matchup 49-13. ... Bauman led Rittman with 93 rushing yards last week, which was a large part of the Indians’ 135 yards total offense. ... Rittman’s defense surrendered 273 yards rushing last week against Chippewa. ... Hackett had his best rushing game this season in last week’s win, as he picked up 131 yards on 18 carries, including a 50-yard TD sprint in the first half. ... Lint’s 15 catches for 225 yards lead Dalton, while Zeek has added seven grabs for 110 yards. ... Dalton is the epitome of balance in the running game, as Lint (513 yards), Hackett (447) and Beun (442) all have more than 400 rushing yards this season. Blevins has added 314 yards. ... Torgler has 4.5 sacks and six tackles for a loss this season, while Miller leads the team with seven sacks and two fumble recoveries. ... Raff has thre interceptions and has a team-high six passes defensed, while Boak has also picked off three passes. Coach speak: "Rittman is a much-improved team," Ramsay said. "Their quarterback (Bauman) is also their main running threat. Earlier this season he was going back and forth between running back and quarterback. The last two games he’s been exclusively back at quarterback. They’re a shotgun spread team that uses one back mainly. Bauman will throw the ball and he’ll run the ball. It’s an offense that we’ve seen, especially with what we saw last week against Northwestern."
